The luxury of experience versus the luxury of things

luxury-of-experience

There is a concept of luxury that is completely alien to opulence. It does not cultivate ostentation, nor display. It does not show itself in the accumulation of expensive and pompous objects. It responds to a new conception: that of genuine pleasure as opposed to pure narcissism. This is the new idea of luxury that the 21st century has brought with it. A luxury in which refinement and personal enjoyment are paramount. In the past, luxury was in the external aspect, in having great jewellery and wearing imposing dresses. That has changed, luxury is now more discreet, it is about having something made for you, with your initials on it. It has to do with what is hard to find. The words of Aristotle, in his «Politics», defined it precisely: «Wealth consists much more in enjoyment than in possession».

Luxury, then, is experience. And authenticity. And knowledge. Luxury is a way of living and valuing what life brings us.

LIVING IS WHAT IS TRULY UNIQUE
There is nothing more exclusive than what you live. It is only for us and it is tailor-made for us. In the same way, true luxury is about memory and time, about discovering a new perspective on life. So that no one else can say that they have lived what we have lived. The new luxury is linked to simplicity: silence, the sparkle of crystal-clear water, the taste of ripe fruit fresh from the tree. These are things that have always been within everyone’s reach and that today are no longer so because of overcrowding, pollution and urban planning without order. That is why luxury today is exactly what Henry David Thoreau expressed in his «Walden» in 1854 as the opposite of luxury: «Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but are an obvious obstacle to the spiritual elevation of mankind». True luxury today seeks, above all, this spiritual elevation.

THE PLEASURE OF THE SENSES IS THE PLEASURE OF THE INTELLECT

Traditionally, the senses have been considered the anchor of pleasure. And, indeed, they provide us with that enjoyment that we will treasure as a precious moment in our memories. The best gastronomy, at the table of the best chefs in the world; discovering landscapes that even today remain untouched by the hand of man; witnessing the art of the best «couturier» in his private salons… All of this has to do with the senses – sight, hearing, taste and touch. But they would not be the same without the presence of the intellect. Knowing in depth the place we are travelling to, its history, its customs and why it is so far away from man multiplies the pleasure. Appreciating a Haute Couture design is only possible if the head also comes into play in the experience. The same goes for the most refined tables. Modern luxury reclaims its status as an intellectual experience.

EXCLUSIVITY IS A PERSONAL ATTITUDE

Luxury is synonymous with being within the reach of the happy few, but over the years, exclusivity has changed. It is no longer so difficult to lose oneself in a dreamlike landscape and stay in a good hotel. Therefore, the key to the new luxury, rather than exclusivity, is «personalisation». It is not so much the material that matters as that something is made just for you. The important thing is not that it is difficult to find but that, in some way, it bears your name. A piece of jewellery, for example, made from a painite, the rarest gemstone in the world, or from alexandrites, which change colour in the light. To be able to identify true luxury, you have to have knowledge. You have to know how to distinguish the good from the best, you have to appreciate the details. The new luxury is a personal attitude.
