“The Concierge is the best friend, psychologist and confidant of the guests of 5*GL and 5* hotels”

Interview with Claudio Heldt, lecturer on the subject ‘Concierge’ in TLI’s Postgraduate Course

“From a young age I grew up in a hotel run by my father in a village in Cordoba. At 4 years old, I already knew how to answer the phone. I started working as a bellboy in 2011 at the 4* Roger de Lluria  hotel, and since then, I have been growing within the sector and have finally found the place where I most enjoy working: Concierge.  My great growth within the luxury sector has been thanks to my work as a Concierge, Concierge Supervisor and as the Head Concierge at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences in Barcelona. A year ago – together with a couple of friends – we created the company Eturgo, focused on teaching the importance of soft skills in Tourism, which came to life as a result of the pandemic and the resulting decline in the quality of service and interest in the industry”. This is how Claudio Heldt, our lecturer on the subject ‘Concierge’ in the III Edition of the Postgraduate Course at The Lifestyle Institute, tells us about his professional career. We chatted with him about his path to TLI, about his profession and, of course, about the importance of the figure of the Concierge in the world of Lifestyle Management.

-How did you come to The Lifestyle Instiutute?

TLI came to my attention thanks to a great person: Lourdes Carbó. We connected thanks to some mutual friends and, after a couple of coffees, a synergy was created that led me to join the team of lecturers.

-Your subject is ‘Concierge’, could you explain what it’s about?

We seek to unravel the figure of the luxury concierge in hotels, residences and other areas: From their history to their exploits and the great network of contacts that are created by being a member of Les Clefs d’Or.

-Could you give us some examples of typical tasks within the role of a Concierge?

The Concierge is the best friend, psychologist, confidant, even a priest (at a wedding), of the clients of the 5*GL and 5* hotels. We are the person to turn to for any request in the city that the client chooses to spend their time on. We are a great added value to the luxury service. The tasks vary – as long as they are legal – from booking a restaurant that has a year-long waiting list at short notice, creating a private guided tour when the Sagrada Familia is closed to the public, to being a travel agent for the client’s next destinations.

“Concierges are a great added value to the luxury service”

– What are the key ideas that you want to pass on to your students to take with them in their future professional career?

The importance of nurturing contacts and connecting with each and every Concierge that crosses their path. After all, we are the ones who make the impossible easy for clients. You could say that we are an extension of service; the person that executes the tasks in the client’s chosen city.

“My goal is for the student to have a clear idea of what a Concierge is, how far they can go and how they can make their job easier”

– And what is your main objective to achieve with this subject?

That the student has a clear idea of what a Concierge is, how far he/she can go and how he/she can make his/her job easier.

– Any anecdote or curious fact of something that has happened to you while teaching on the Postgraduate course.

In the classes I have connected with lovely students from South Africa, France, Dubai… and we have been able to share moments and accomplishments that I keep for the next students to enjoy as well (smiles).

-We recently did an editorial pointing out the differences between the figure of Caretaker and the Concierge. Would you like to add any concept or idea in this regard?

The only thing to add to this concept is that international luxury chains, such as Mandarin Oriental or Four Seasons, among others, are increasingly focusing on the creation of Residences with hotel services. The Mandarin Oriental is taking a big bet on this area and, in this case, the same person becomes both profiles rolled into one: They combine the best of the Concierge and the Caretaker.

-¿Cómo llegaste a The Lifestyle Instiutute?
